New Jersey, October 8th, 2016 - In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dentists across New Jersey are teaming up to provide FREE Dental Health Screening and medication impact evaluations to breast cancer"Thrivers and Survivors" during the month of October!

From now until October 31st, thirty one dental offices in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will provide a free dental exam, x-rays, a medication dental impact evaluation and dental consultation for improving the health of teeth and gums to any patient, who has survived breast cancer or is currently receiving treatment or on medication for chronic pain after treatment.

More than one third of people being treated for breast cancer or for chronic pain after breast cancer treatment can develop complications that affect their oral health. Chemotherapy agents and prescription pain medication can cause a person's mouth to become dry and/or inflamed. This can be very painful affecting tooth and gum health as well as impacting swallowing, taste, speech, appetite and even sleep.

In addition, many breast cancer patients current and post treatment deal with compromised immune systems. This is where dental check ups are critical to make sure signs of periodontal disease or other oral infections are not developing.  Dentists are able to suggest prescription strength neutral sodium fluoride toothpaste and rinse and can also custom create fluoride trays to be worn every night to help prevent cavities that often develop as a result of damaged tooth enamel.
